How to Change Your Driving Test Date in the UK (2026 Rules)

Your driving test is booked, but the date is no longer convenient — or it is too far away and you would really like something sooner. The good news is that the DVSA lets you change your test up to 2 times for free. The catch is that the rules changed on 12 May 2026, and the ways you can change your test changed with them.

This guide explains how to change the date, time or centre of your UK practical driving test in 2026. It covers:

  • The difference between changing and swapping your test
  • The 2-change rule and how it applies to you
  • The new rules effective from 12 May and 9 June 2026
  • How to change your test via the DVSA booking service
  • How a peer-to-peer swap is the free way to get an earlier slot

Changing vs swapping your driving test

The DVSA distinguishes between changing and swapping. They are different mechanisms with different rules.

A change is when you book a new test date, time or centre for yourself. You pick a new slot from what is available on the DVSA booking system. The old slot is released back to DVSA. You lose your original slot.

A swap is when you and another learner exchange bookings. You do not pick a new slot from the DVSA system. You agree to take the other learner's existing booking, and they take yours. DVSA changes both bookings in one phone call. You both end up with the other person's original date.

Both count as one of your 2 allowed changes. After you have used both, you cannot change or swap again until you have taken a test.

If you want an earlier test, both mechanisms are free. The difference is what is available:

  • A change is limited to whatever slots are showing on the DVSA booking page when you look
  • A swap gives you access to whatever slots another learner already has booked

For most learners, a swap is the better path to an earlier date. There are usually more booked-but-wanted-later slots in the system than there are fresh cancellations.

The 2-change rule

Every learner gets 2 changes to their driving test booking. After both are used, the booking is locked.

A change can be any of:

  • A change of date
  • A change of time
  • A change of centre
  • A swap with another learner

Cancelling a test counts as a change. If you cancel and rebook, that uses one of your changes.

Updating your contact details on your booking does not count as a change. You can update your address, email or phone number as many times as you need without using a change.

If you have already used both changes, you cannot change or swap again. You can only cancel (which counts as your third change and locks the booking). MoveMyTest's matching system checks this automatically — if either learner has no changes left, no match is proposed.

What changed on 12 May 2026

From 12 May 2026, the rules for who can change your booking changed fundamentally.

Before 12 May 2026:

  • A driving instructor could change, swap or cancel a pupil's test using the DVSA business service
  • Third-party apps and unofficial booking services could hold or change slots on behalf of learners

From 12 May 2026:

  • Only the learner driver can change, swap or cancel their own practical car driving test
  • Driving instructors can no longer use the business service for pupil bookings
  • Third-party services that held or resold slots lost that mechanism

The DVSA's 12 May press release called it "End of the road for unofficial driving test booking services". The change was designed to push the bot-and-reseller industry out and give learners direct control over their own bookings.

For you as a learner: the practical effect is that you are now the only person who can change your test. If you used to rely on your instructor to manage this, you now do it yourself. MoveMyTest exists to make the part the DVSA does not cover — finding another learner to swap with — safe, private and free.

What changed on 9 June 2026

A second DVSA bulletin on 9 June 2026 added a new geographic rule for changes:

"From today, your pupils can only move their test to one of the 3 nearest test centres."

For learners wanting to change their test, this means:

  • You can change your date or time to any slot at your current centre
  • You can change your centre to one of the 3 nearest to your originally booked centre
  • You can change your centre back to the centre you first booked at (if different)

You can no longer change your test to a centre on the other side of the country, even if a much earlier slot is available there.

For most learners this is invisible — you usually want a test near where you take lessons. The change primarily affects anyone hoping to chase a much earlier slot at a distant centre. That option is now closed.

How to change your driving test

To change your own test, you go through the DVSA booking service:

  1. Sign in at gov.uk/book-driving-test using your driving licence number and booking reference.
  2. On the "View booking" page, select Change next to "Test date and time" or "Test centre".
  3. Pick a new slot from what is available. The DVSA will only show you slots at your current centre, your first-booked centre, or one of the 3 nearest centres.
  4. Confirm the change.

The change uses one of your 2 allowed changes. After confirming, the new booking replaces the old one. Your old slot is released back to DVSA's booking system.

You cannot change your test:

  • By phone
  • By email
  • By webchat
  • By text message
  • Using the DVSA WhatsApp account
  • Using DVSA social media accounts

The only way to change is online through the booking service. If you cannot use the booking service, call DVSA on 0300 200 1122 and they will help — but only you, the learner, can authorise the change.

How to swap your driving test

If you want an earlier slot and there is nothing suitable on the booking service, swapping with another learner is the alternative.

The swap process in full:

  1. Check eligibility. Use the checklist below. You must have a change left, the new test must be at least 10 working days away, your instructor must be available, and the location and test type rules must be met.
  2. Create a free listing on MoveMyTest. Enter your current centre, date, time and what you would consider swapping to. We only ask for the minimum details.
  3. Wait for a match. MoveMyTest checks DVSA rules and proposes compatible matches. You get notified by SMS and email the moment a match is found.
  4. Review in your private match room. Open the match room to see the proposed swap. Accept or decline within 2 business days. The other learner does the same on their side.
  5. Both accept. When both sides accept, booking references are shared inside the match room. Neither of you sees sensitive data like payment details or licence numbers.
  6. Call DVSA together on 0300 200 1122. One learner rings DVSA, DVSA calls the other for security checks. The official swap is completed by DVSA. MoveMyTest never changes your booking.

The swap uses one of your 2 allowed changes. After the swap, you have one change left.

When a swap is better than a change

A swap is the right path when:

  • The DVSA booking service shows no earlier slots at your centre
  • There is no slot at one of your 3 nearest centres either
  • You have plenty of time (more than 10 working days)
  • You are happy to swap to a date another learner already has booked
  • You want a free, safe way to find a swap partner without using a paid service

A change is the right path when:

  • There is an earlier slot at your centre that suits you
  • You want a slot at a different time on the same date
  • You want a slot at a specific centre that has availability
  • You are happy with whatever is showing on the booking page

Both are free. Both use one of your 2 allowed changes.

When a swap is not possible

You cannot swap if:

  • You have already used both your allowed changes
  • The proposed new date is less than 10 full working days away
  • Your instructor is not available on the proposed new date
  • The other learner's test is a different type (manual/automatic, weekday/weekend)
  • The other learner's centre does not meet the location rule for you
  • The other learner does not want to swap to your date and centre

MoveMyTest checks all of these automatically. If a match fails any of these rules, it will not be shown to you.

Common learner questions

Can I change my driving test date for free? Yes. The DVSA does not charge for changing or swapping a test. You can change or swap up to 2 times per booking.

How many times can I change my driving test? You get 2 changes per booking. After both are used, you cannot change or swap again.

Can my instructor change my test for me? No. From 12 May 2026, only you, the learner, can change or swap your test. The DVSA business service no longer allows instructors to manage pupil bookings.

Can I change my test by phone? No. Changes must be made online through the DVSA booking service. Swaps are completed by phone with DVSA, but the change itself (i.e. picking a new slot for yourself) is online only.

Can I change to a centre in a different part of the country? No. From 9 June 2026, you can only change to your current centre, your first-booked centre, or one of the 3 nearest centres to your originally booked centre.

What happens if I cancel my test? Cancellation counts as one of your 2 allowed changes. After cancelling, you can change or swap one more time. After that, the booking is locked.

Can I get a refund if I cancel? You get a full refund if you cancel at least 10 full working days before the test. If you cancel within 10 working days, you do not get a refund. If you fail to attend without cancelling, you do not get a refund and the change still counts.

What is the difference between a change and a swap? A change is when you pick a new slot for yourself from the booking service. A swap is when you exchange your slot with another learner. Both use one of your 2 allowed changes. Both are free.

Can I use a paid cancellation-checking service to find an earlier test? You can, but be aware that the DVSA has been cracking down on these services since 12 May 2026. The legitimate alternative is a peer-to-peer swap, which MoveMyTest provides for free.

Is MoveMyTest free? Yes. There is no subscription, no success fee, and no hidden charges. MoveMyTest is free for learners.

How to get an earlier driving test in 2026

If your goal is to get an earlier test date, the most reliable path in 2026 is:

  1. Check the DVSA booking service first. If an earlier slot is showing at your centre or one of your 3 nearest, change your test. It is free and instant.
  2. If nothing is available, create a free listing on MoveMyTest. We will notify you the moment a compatible match is found. Most learners get a match within a few days.
  3. Avoid paid cancellation-checking services. Many have been operating outside DVSA rules since 12 May 2026. Peer-to-peer swap is the safe, free, DVSA-compliant alternative.

To start, create your free listing.

Quick learner checklist

Before changing or swapping your test, confirm:

  • I have at least one of my 2 allowed changes left
  • The new test date is at least 10 full working days from today
  • My instructor has confirmed I will be test-ready for the new date
  • My instructor is available to take me to the new centre, date and time
  • The new centre is the same as my current centre, my first-booked centre, or one of my 3 nearest
  • The other learner's test is the same type (manual/automatic, weekday/weekend)
  • DVSA has my correct phone number and email on file

If you can tick all of these, you are ready to change or swap safely.

Final advice

Changing your driving test is free, allowed up to 2 times, and easy to do online. If there is an earlier slot showing on the booking service, change your test. If there is not, swapping with another learner through MoveMyTest is the safest, free, DVSA-compliant way to get an earlier date.

Either way, you are the only person who can change your booking. That is the core effect of the 12 May 2026 rule change. If you have a date you would rather not have, you now have the tools to fix it.
