If your practical car driving test no longer suits you, there are two main routes: choose another available appointment through the official booking service, or agree a learner-to-learner swap.
Both routes are covered by the 2026 booking rules. This guide explains the 2-change limit, the test-centre restrictions and what to check before giving up your current appointment.
Changing and swapping are different
A change means choosing another date, time or centre from the appointments available in the official DVSA booking service. Once confirmed, the new appointment replaces your old one.
A swap means exchanging bookings with another learner. Both learners keep their original appointments while considering the match. DVSA checks both bookings and completes the exchange if the rules are met.
Changing the date or time, changing the test centre, and swapping with another learner each count as one booking change.
The 2-change limit
You can make 2 changes to a car driving test booking. These include:
- changing the date or time;
- changing the test centre; or
- swapping with another learner.
Changing your contact details does not count.
Cancelling does not use one of the 2 changes. However, after you have used both changes, GOV.UK says you must cancel and book again if you still need another appointment. The usual cancellation-notice and refund rules apply.
Who can manage the booking?
Since 12 May 2026, only the learner can book, change, swap or cancel their car driving test. An instructor can still discuss suitable dates and help the learner prepare, but cannot manage the learner's booking.
GOV.UK also says unofficial services that scan the booking system for appointments, including cancellation finders and apps, are not allowed. Use the official GOV.UK service when checking availability or changing your own booking.
The test-centre location rule
From 9 June 2026, where you can move a test depends on the centre attached to the current booking.
In general, you can move to:
- the centre where your test is currently booked;
- one of the 3 nearest test centres to it; or
- the first test centre booked on the current booking.

The location rule also applies to swaps and must work for both learners.
How to change your driving test online
- Open the official change your driving test appointment service.
- Sign in with the details requested by GOV.UK.
- Choose whether to change the date and time or the test centre.
- Review the appointments shown.
- Confirm only when the new appointment works for you.
Do not cancel your current booking just to search for another date. Use the official change service so that you can review the options attached to your existing booking.
A different fee may apply if you move between a weekday appointment and a premium-time appointment.
When a learner swap may help
A swap may be worth considering when no suitable appointment is showing online but another learner already has a date you would prefer.
For DVSA to complete a swap:
- both learners must already have car driving tests booked;
- both must want the exact exchange;
- both must have a booking change remaining;
- DVSA must process the swap at least 10 full working days before the earlier of the two tests;
- the fee and any special booking categories must be compatible; and
- the test-centre location rule must work in both directions.
