Step by step
How to swap your driving test safely
MoveMyTest is a free matching service. It helps two learners find a possible exact-slot exchange, then both learners complete the official swap by phone with DVSA.
How swapping works for learners
- 1
List what you have
Enter your current test centre, date and time, plus the centres and dates you would consider. No licence number, address or card details needed.
- 2
MoveMyTest checks compatibility
Our match engine compares your listing against every other active listing, checking test type, remaining changes, DVSA timing and location rules.
- 3
Review the match privately
You see a private match card with the exact swap details. Your booking reference and contact details stay hidden until both learners accept.
- 4
Both learners accept
Either side can decline or report a match. Once both learners accept and confirm they are ready, the booking references become visible for the DVSA call.
- 5
Call DVSA together
Both learners call DVSA on 0300 200 1122 during the same call window. DVSA runs security checks with each learner and updates both bookings on the spot.
How visibility works for instructors
- 1
Register your ADI number
Create a free instructor account so pupils can link to your ADI number. You decide which notifications you receive and when.
- 2
Pupils link to you
When a pupil lists a swap or accepts an invite, they appear on your linked-learners dashboard. You see their current and proposed test slots.
- 3
Review proposed swaps
Before a pupil accepts a match, you can see the new centre, date and time. Flag any conflict with lessons, readiness or travel time.
- 4
Set blackout windows
Record the dates you are unavailable or when a pupil should not move a test. Your pupils see this guidance inside their dashboard.
- 5
Stay compliant
MoveMyTest checks the same DVSA rules you do: exact slot exchange, remaining changes, 10 working days and location limits. You still guide the final decision.
Key DVSA rules MoveMyTest checks
- Exact slot exchangeBoth learners must want each other’s date, time and centre.
- Remaining changesBoth learners need at least 1 of their 2 allowed changes remaining.
- 10 full working daysThe swap request must be at least 10 full working days before the earliest test.
- Test type matchWeekday, evening/weekend, extra-time and extended tests only match the same type.
- Location rule from 9 June 2026For car tests, both centres must be the same, one of the 3 nearest, or the originally booked centre.
- Northern IrelandDVA/nidirect manages NI tests. MoveMyTest lists NI centres, but live NI matching is disabled until the DVA process is confirmed.
Common questions
What is a driving test swap?
It is an exchange of two existing practical car driving test bookings. You are not booking a new test; both learners must want each other's exact date, time and centre.
What does MoveMyTest do?
MoveMyTest helps identify compatible learners and provides a private match room. MoveMyTest does not complete the official swap or access DVSA systems for you.
What does DVSA do?
DVSA completes the official phone process, security checks, legal declarations and booking update.
When can a swap not go ahead?
A swap cannot go ahead if either learner has no changes left, the earliest test is inside the 10 full working day window, test types differ, either learner does not agree, security checks fail, or location rules are not met.
What changes from 9 June 2026?
For car tests, each learner can only swap if the other learner’s centre is the same centre, one of the 3 nearest centres, or the test centre first booked for the current booking. This must be true for both learners.
What should I keep private?
Never share your driving licence number, address, payment card details, card security code, theory certificate number or GOV.UK login details with another learner.
