Swapping Your Driving Test: The Complete 2026 Guide

If your driving test is weeks or months away and you would happily take an earlier slot, you are not alone. Thousands of UK learners are in the same position every week. Some get there first because they happen to refresh the DVSA booking page at the right moment. Most wait.

A swap is the other way. Instead of waiting for a cancellation to appear, you find another learner who already has a test booked for a date you would prefer. You exchange bookings. The DVSA handles the actual change by phone. Both of you end up with a test date that suits you better.

This guide covers the entire process in 2026, including the major DVSA rule change on 12 May 2026 and the follow-up change on 9 June 2026. It is written for UK learner drivers who want a clear, practical explanation of how swaps work, who can do them, what the DVSA actually requires, and how to find another learner to swap with safely and for free.

If you are weighing swap against a paid cancellation-checker service, our side-by-side comparison is the quicker read. If you are only trying to push your date back, not bring it forward, see change your driving test date.

What is a driving test swap

A swap is when two learners exchange their existing test bookings with each other. You do not find a new date or a new centre by yourself. You find another learner whose test you would rather take, and they would rather take yours. You both call DVSA together, DVSA runs security checks on both of you, and DVSA changes both bookings in one phone call.

The DVSA's own guidance, published 5 May 2026, makes the distinction clear: "Swapping is different from changing your test. You are not finding a new date or time. You and another learner driver are exchanging your existing bookings with each other."

A swap is not:

  • Booking a brand-new test at a different centre and date (that is a change)
  • Asking your driving instructor to find an earlier slot for you (that is not allowed after 12 May 2026)
  • Using a paid cancellation-checking service (that is a different product and the DVSA has been cracking down on those since 12 May)
  • A cancellation (cancellations return the slot to DVSA, who release it back to the booking system)

A swap is specifically and only: two learners, both with existing bookings, exchanging those bookings with each other, by phone with DVSA.

Who can swap a driving test

You can swap your car driving test with another learner driver if all of the following are true. Each of these is a DVSA rule, not a MoveMyTest policy.

  • You both have a car driving test booked
  • You both want to swap to each other's exact test date, time and centre (or a centre that meets the new location rule — see below)
  • You both have at least one of your 2 allowed changes left
  • You request the swap at least 10 full working days before the earliest of the two tests
  • The same type of test is being swapped — manual for manual, automatic for automatic, weekday for weekday, evening/weekend/bank holiday for evening/weekend/bank holiday
  • Both your driving instructors have confirmed you will be test-ready for the new date
  • Both your driving instructors are available to take you to the new centre, date and time

If any of these fails, DVSA will not complete the swap. Both your original tests stay unchanged.

Who cannot swap a driving test

A few categories of learner cannot swap, either by DVSA rule or because the swap would not be useful:

  • Learners whose test type is not the same as the other learner's
  • Learners with no remaining allowed changes
  • Learners whose instructor is not available on the proposed new date
  • Learners whose proposed new date is less than 10 full working days away
  • Anyone whose test was booked by a third party under the old business service rules — those bookings still count as swaps, but the 12 May 2026 change means the booking itself can no longer be changed by anyone other than the learner

From 12 May 2026, your driving instructor cannot book, change, swap or cancel your test for you. If your instructor did book your test before that date, the swap itself still has to be done by you as the learner.

What changed on 12 May 2026

The 12 May 2026 change was the single biggest shift in driving test booking in over a decade. The DVSA's own press release that day was titled "End of the road for unofficial driving test booking services" and the change had three effects:

  • Only the learner driver can book, change, swap or cancel their own practical car driving test
  • Driving instructors can no longer manage a pupil's booking through the DVSA business service
  • Third-party services that previously resold or held test slots lost the mechanism to do so

The DVSA bulletin on 17 March 2026 had signposted the change. The 12 May press release made it operational. The BBC reported on the same day that the rule change was designed to "give learner drivers control over their own test booking" and to push the bot-and-reseller industry out of the market.

For learners who want to swap, the practical effect is: the instructor can no longer be the one to find a swap partner and complete the paperwork. The learner has to do both. MoveMyTest exists exactly for this — to handle the matching for free so the learner does not have to find another learner themselves.

What changed on 9 June 2026

A second DVSA bulletin, sent on 9 June 2026, added a new geographic rule:

"From today, your pupils can only move their test to one of the 3 nearest test centres."

In practice this means: when you swap, the new centre you move to has to be one of the three nearest centres to the centre you first booked at (or the same centre as the other learner, or your original first-booked centre).

For most learners this is invisible — they book and learn at the same centre anyway, and any swap would be at the same or a nearby centre. The change primarily affects anyone hoping to chase a much earlier slot at a distant centre. That option is now closed.

The 2 allowed changes rule

You are allowed 2 changes to your driving test booking. A change can be any combination of:

  • A change of date
  • A change of time
  • A change of centre
  • A swap with another learner

After you have used both changes, you cannot change or swap again. If you cancel a test, that also counts as a change. Updating your contact details on the booking does not count as a change.

If you have used both changes, you cannot swap. MoveMyTest's matching system checks this automatically — if either learner has no remaining changes, no match will be proposed.

The 10 working days notice rule

You must request a swap at least 10 full working days before the earliest of the two tests. Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not.

"Earliest of the two tests" means the earlier of your test date and the other learner's test date. The clock starts from the day you call DVSA.

For example: if the earliest test is on 1 July 2026, you must call DVSA no later than 17 June 2026 (counting back 10 working days, excluding Sundays). If you call on 18 June, the swap cannot proceed.

MoveMyTest's matching enforces this rule. You will never be shown a match where the timing would breach the 10 working day window.

The location rule for swaps

There are three ways to satisfy the location rule for a swap, per the DVSA's 5 May 2026 guidance. The new centre must be one of:

  • The same test centre as your original test
  • One of the 3 nearest test centres to your originally booked centre
  • The test centre you first booked at (which may be different from your current centre if you have already moved centres)

The other learner also has to satisfy the location rule from their side. A swap can only go ahead if the location rule is met for both of you.

MoveMyTest's matching system accounts for this automatically. The system knows the geography of every DVSA test centre and only proposes matches where the location rule is satisfied for both learners.

Test type compatibility

You can only swap with a learner who has the same type of test booking as you. The DVSA's own list is:

  • Weekday tests (£62) can only swap with other weekday tests
  • Evening, weekend and bank holiday tests (£75) can only swap with the same
  • Tests given extra time due to a disability, health condition or learning difficulty can only swap with the same
  • Extended driving test for disqualified drivers on weekdays (£124) can only swap with the same
  • Extended driving test for disqualified drivers at evenings, weekends and bank holidays (£150) can only swap with the same

A weekday car test cannot swap with an evening car test. A manual test cannot swap with an automatic test. An extended test for disqualified drivers cannot swap with a standard test.

MoveMyTest's matching system checks test type compatibility. If a proposed match fails the test type rule, it will not be shown to you.

Check your driving instructor is available

Before making the swap, both you and the other learner must confirm with your driving instructors that:

  • They agree you will be ready to take the test on the date you are swapping to
  • They will be available to take you to the new test centre, date and time

Your instructor does not have to do anything on the DVSA side any more (after 12 May 2026, they cannot). But they do have to be physically available to drive you to the test on the new date. If they cannot make the new date, you cannot proceed with the swap.

MoveMyTest does not handle instructor availability — that is a conversation you have with your instructor directly. If your instructor cannot make the proposed new date, decline the match and wait for a different one.

How to swap your driving test — step by step

The full swap process, end to end, with the new rules in mind:

  1. Check you are eligible to swap. Use the checklist at the bottom of this guide. You must have a change left, the date must be at least 10 working days away, your instructor must be available, and the location and test type rules must be met.
  2. Find a learner to swap with. Use MoveMyTest to create a free listing. We only ask for the minimum details — current centre, date, time, what you would consider swapping to. You do not give us your licence number, theory pass number, or booking reference at this stage.
  3. Receive a match. When we find a compatible learner, you get an SMS and email alert. The match respects all DVSA rules: location, test type, timing, change availability.
  4. Review the match in your private match room. Open the match room to see the proposed swap. Accept or decline within 2 business days. The other learner does the same on their side.
  5. Both accept. When both sides accept, booking references are shared inside the match room. The other learner sees your booking reference; you see theirs. Neither of you sees sensitive data like payment details or licence numbers.
  6. One of you calls DVSA. Either you or the other learner rings DVSA customer services on 0300 200 1122, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. Select option 1 and follow the prompts.
  7. DVSA runs security checks. DVSA confirms the caller's identity using their licence number and booking reference. The caller confirms they agree to the swap.
  8. DVSA calls the other learner. DVSA hangs up with the caller and rings the other learner on the number recorded on their booking. DVSA will not accept a different number. The other learner confirms identity and agreement.
  9. DVSA completes the swap. DVSA returns to the original caller and confirms both bookings have been changed. The caller and the other learner each get the other's original date, time and centre.
  10. No email confirmation. DVSA does not send an email confirmation. The next reminder email you receive from DVSA about your test will have the new details.

If at any point during the call DVSA cannot complete the swap — security check fails, other learner does not answer, location rule not met — both original bookings stand unchanged. You keep your original test date and time. You can try to find another swap from there.

What to do before you call DVSA

Have these ready before you dial 0300 200 1122:

  • Your driving licence number
  • Your own driving test booking reference number
  • The other learner's driving test booking reference number
  • The date, time and centre of your currently booked test
  • The date, time and centre of the test you have agreed to swap to
  • Details of any driving tests you have taken before
  • Your payment card details (only if your instructor booked the test before 12 May 2026 — otherwise DVSA will not need this)

DVSA will never ask for the full payment card number or its security code. If anyone does, including someone claiming to be DVSA, hang up and report it.

Update your contact details on your booking before you call. Make sure DVSA has the right phone number on file for the security callback. Updating contact details does not use one of your allowed changes.

How the DVSA phone call works

The DVSA call sequence is:

  • One learner (the caller) rings DVSA on 0300 200 1122.
  • DVSA does security checks with the caller. The caller confirms they agree to the swap.
  • The caller gives DVSA the other learner's booking reference number. DVSA will not ask for the other learner's name or contact details.
  • DVSA puts the caller on hold and calls the other learner on the phone number recorded for their booking. DVSA will only call on that number — it will not accept a different number from the caller.
  • DVSA does security checks with the other learner. The other learner confirms they agree to the swap.
  • DVSA returns to the caller and completes the swap.

DVSA will refuse the swap if either learner fails the security checks, does not agree to a legal declaration, has already used both allowed changes, or if the other learner does not answer the security callback.

If the swap fails, both original test bookings stay unchanged. Neither learner loses their original slot.

After the swap is complete

Once the swap is done:

  • You have the other learner's original driving test date, time and centre
  • They have yours
  • Both DVSA booking records are updated
  • You keep your booking reference number, payment details, and any special requirements (extra time, etc.)
  • You will not get a confirmation email — the next reminder email you get from DVSA will have the new details

Make sure you note your new test date and centre after the call. If you have anything booked around your original test date (a driving lesson, a hire car, time off work), update those arrangements for the new date.

Personal data and scam safety

The peer-to-peer nature of a swap means you do have to share a booking reference with another learner. The DVSA's own guidance is clear on what you should never share:

Never share with another learner:

  • Your driving licence number
  • Your theory test pass certificate number
  • Your address
  • Your phone number or email address
  • Your payment card details

The only thing you need to share for the swap to work is your DVSA booking reference number. DVSA's security system is built around that reference — it is the only data point needed to identify the booking.

MoveMyTest's design reflects this. Inside the match room, the only data shared between the two learners is each other's booking reference number. Personal data like email and phone numbers are kept inside the MoveMyTest notification system, not exposed to the other learner.

If anyone claiming to be from DVSA, MoveMyTest or anywhere else asks for your full payment card number, security code, licence number or theory pass number, refuse. The legitimate DVSA call never asks for these.

If someone offers to "guarantee" a swap, "skip the DVSA call" or "do the swap for you", they are running a scam. The DVSA phone call is the only mechanism by which a swap is legal. Anyone claiming otherwise is operating outside the rules and may be trying to take your money.

Why use MoveMyTest for a swap

Before the 12 May 2026 rule change, instructors and third-party services handled most of the legwork of finding a swap partner. After 12 May, that work is entirely on the learner. MoveMyTest exists to make that part simple, safe and free.

What MoveMyTest does:

  • Checks DVSA rules on your behalf — location, test type, timing, change availability
  • Notifies you by SMS and email the moment a compatible match is found
  • Hosts the private match room where you and the other learner review and accept the swap
  • Shares booking references securely between learners after both consent
  • Keeps your personal data private — only booking references are shared

What MoveMyTest does not do:

  • MoveMyTest does not change your booking. The DVSA does that, by phone, with security checks on both learners.
  • MoveMyTest does not collect payment details. The service is free.
  • MoveMyTest does not share your licence number, theory pass number, or contact details with another learner.
  • MoveMyTest does not run bots or grab slots. Every match is a real learner with a real booking.

Quick learner checklist before trying to swap

Use this before creating a listing or calling DVSA:

  • I have a current practical car test booked
  • The new test date is at least 10 full working days from today
  • I have at least one of my 2 allowed changes left
  • My instructor has confirmed I will be test-ready for the new date
  • My instructor is available to take me to the new centre, date and time
  • The other learner's test is the same type (manual/automatic, weekday/weekend)
  • The other learner's centre is the same as mine, one of the 3 nearest, or my first booked centre
  • I have not shared any sensitive personal data with the other learner
  • I have my booking reference number ready
  • DVSA has my correct phone number on file for the security callback

If you can tick all of these, you are ready to swap safely.

Common learner questions

Can I swap between manual and automatic tests? No. DVSA rules require the swap to be for the same test type and transmission. MoveMyTest only proposes matches that are compatible.

What number do I call to complete the swap? DVSA customer services is 0300 200 1122, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. Select option 1.

Do I have to be in the same room as the other learner? No. You both need to be available at the same time, but DVSA will call the other learner separately. You do not have to be together.

Will DVSA ask for my payment card details? Only if your instructor booked the test for you before 12 May 2026. Otherwise DVSA will not need them. DVSA will never ask for the full card number or the security code.

How long does the swap take? The DVSA phone call typically takes 10–15 minutes, depending on hold times. Both learners need to be available for the duration of the call.

Can I swap a theory test? No. The DVSA swap process is for the practical car driving test only. Theory tests cannot be swapped in the same way.

What if my instructor booked the test for me before 12 May 2026? The swap process is the same. Only the booking itself was handled by the instructor; the swap still has to be done by you, the learner, by phone with DVSA.

What if my instructor changes their availability after I accept a match? Tell the other learner immediately and decline. Both of you go back to your original bookings. You can create a new listing and try again.

What if the other learner cancels after we accept? The swap is not complete until DVSA has changed both bookings. If the other learner cancels before the DVSA call, you keep your original test slot and can search again.

Is there a fee for using MoveMyTest? No. MoveMyTest is free for learners. There is no subscription, no success fee, and no hidden charges.

Final advice for learners

A swap is the only free, legal, peer-to-peer way to bring your UK driving test forward. The 12 May 2026 rule change made it the only mechanism left for many learners — their instructors can no longer handle the swap on their behalf. The 9 June 2026 update narrowed which centres you can swap to, but the core swap process is unchanged and DVSA-confirmed.

If you want an earlier test, the safest path is:

  1. Create a free listing on MoveMyTest
  2. Wait for a match that meets all DVSA rules
  3. Review and accept in the match room
  4. Call DVSA together on 0300 200 1122
  5. The swap is completed by DVSA

There are no shortcuts. Anyone offering a "guaranteed earlier test" outside this process is operating illegally. MoveMyTest does the matching and notification for free; the DVSA does the official swap.
